Flow Machines
AI Assisted Music

I helped create the brand website for Flow Machines, jointly researched and developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories and Sony Music Entertainment. Flow Machines is a research, development, and social implementation project that aims to expand the creativity of music creators. It builds on music research that Sony CSL Paris and Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris 6) began together in 2012, and I joined to launch the brand website as the project moved to its current structure. As a web designer, I handled everything from creative and art direction to UI/UX design, illustration, and front-end and CMS development.

Flow Machines is not an AI that replaces humans (creators). Its purpose is to expand human creativity by freely generating melodies in a wide variety of styles based on a creator's ideas. Rather than the "AI will replace us" argument often heard in recent years, I wanted visitors to properly understand its design philosophy of keeping "humans at the center," while also simply enjoying how fascinating the technology is. So I built the design around an interactive audio visualizer and illustrations.
To give shape to the vague image of "AI and music" and get people excited about the future Flow Machines envisions, I turned the process by which people and Flow Machines create a song together into an experience with an interactive audio visualizer. By dragging and dropping sound elements from what is called the "Style Palette" onto the visualizer, visitors can experience a simulation of how a song is generated.
