Akiko Kamiyama

Digital Archive Project

I helped create the website of Akiko Kamiyama, a painter and printmaker. Her art, which has depicted the most ordinary of human activities, is not the kind that appeals to empathy through the commonplace or nostalgia. If I had to put it into words, I would call it a world that makes visible the gap between reason and emotion. On her canvases stands something like a "human," in a state where you cannot tell whether it is happy, sad, or in pain. The Akiko Kamiyama Digital Archive Project aims to let people around the world feel the particular eeriness and melancholy you sense when standing before her work.

UX of Information

To create a one-on-one moment between each work, appearing unannounced, and the visitor facing it, I designed a UX for viewing works one at a time, as you would in a museum or an art book. Anything on the first screen that might define her work in some way, such as a site title or chromatic colors, was eliminated as far as possible, putting the weight of the UX on pure communication between the work itself and the visitor.
